Multiple Devices....Multiple Solutions
by Laura Dempsey

Hi, I am Laura, I use assistive technology as I have a visual impairment. I use three different types of assistive technology.

I use Jaws for Windows on my computers, I have VoiceOver on my iPad and my phone also has a VoiceOver feature.  I have been using Jaws on my computers since I was eighteen years of age.  I have had the VoiceOver on my phone since I was twenty, my phones before then did not have the feature.  I only got my iPad last year.  Jaws allows me to hear what is appearing on my screen as it speaks to me.  The VoiceOver on the iPad does the same.  My phone reads my texts aloud and tells me who is calling me.  Jaws allows me to part take in IT Training in my centre and it also allows me to cover reception when our receptionist is away.  It and my iPad allow me to access Social Media such as Facebook and You Tube.  My assistive technology is really helpful but there can be issues.  With Jaws, not all icons on the screen function with my keyboard, and I can’t fix this issue.  If someone in a similar situation to me was looking to use assistive technology, I would advise them to go and look at the different speech software that is available and see which one would suit them best.
