Italian rider Matteo Rabottini has been banned until May 2016 after returning a positive test for EPO last August.

Rabottini failed an out-of-competition test, which was reported on September 12 just hours after he had been selected for the Italian squad for the World Road Championships.

The 27-year-old won a stage of the 2012 Giro d'Italia and also claimed the blue jersey as leading climber in the race that year.

His two-year ban was cut by three months for co-operating with anti-doping authorities.

Rabottini was suspended by his Neri Sottoli team last year and will be ineligible to compete for the next 12 months. Neri Sottoli have since been rebranded as Southeast Pro Cycling and are competing in this month's Giro.
