FIESTA Research Update

The FIESTA research aims to inform the development of inclusion, transition and collaborative working through identifying best practice among the, 8 EU member states (Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain, and the UK). The application of the inclusive agenda and the ultilisation of various inclusive approaches and resources are at various stages in these EU countries. This is partly due to the countries’ different political and cultural backgrounds. The FIESTA consortium believes that only by having detailed knowledge and understanding of the existing environment one can take informed and relevant decisions for introducing best working practices. So, the aim of the main research programme within the FIESTA network is not only to present best practices for inclusion, transition management and collaborative working, but also to provide an in-depth analysis of the factors that support these best practices.

The research was carried out in three phases:
  1. Literature Review: The theoretical overview of existing national and international acts, have been reported in the FIESTA literature review with particular attention to inclusion transition and collaborative working. As a result of this literature review the FIESTA team developed a set of hypothesis of which the research was to be measured against. The literature review is available for download here.
  2. In identifying the core constructs of best practice transition of children with additional support needs, quantitative field research was conducted to collect evidence from respondents regarding their own practices allowing us to identify what factors that lay behind their approach to transition (This research was conducted  on-line among educational, health and social professionals and parents of children with additional needs).
  3. Qualitative field research was also conducted to encourage the respondents to be self-reflective and to discuss their experiences with other stakeholders including professional focus groups and interviews with children with additional needs and parents of children with additional needs.
